Much of the wedding ceremony is ritual and every little extra nuance makes your day special and one you want to remember forever. The lighting of a unity candle is relatively new in Ireland and brings a personal touch to the ceremony. Unity Candle Ritual Two candles are lighted, one to represent each of the people getting married.  When the couple are pronounced man & wife they each take a candle and bring them together towards a tall pillar candle and transfer the flame from the candle they are holding to the unity candle signifying their union in marriage.  Both taper candles are then extinguished – again the symbolism is they are no longer one but part of a greater union.
